AS STARS THEY SHINE FOREVER

12:3 They that are wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.

This is a call to holiness! A call to righteousness!
Paul writes: It is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. Do everything without complaining and arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved nation, in which you shine like stars in the world. Phil. 2:13-15 Daniel 11 pictures a perverse and crooked power influencing the nations, yet in the midst of this God's children are to be blameless and pure, without fault, shining as the stars.

Shining like stars in the midst of moral darkness. A people living a real and holy life because God is working in them "to will and to act according to his good purpose."
Proverbs. 4.18 The path of the just is as the shining light, that shines more and more unto the perfect day."

What is it, which in the "time of the end" when the corrupted powers of Daniel 11 are preverting the truths of the Bible and declaring war on all opposition, enables some to shine as stars of righteousness?

It is FAITH! Yes, and faith is conviction, a state of mind that is convinced of God's realities. Confidence that motivates to action!

God's law, the standard of righteousness was seen as still residing under the mercy seat in the heavenly sanctuary and binding on the people. God's ten laws were recognized as still pointing out what sin is, and driving people to Christ for cleansing. As the full understanding of God's covenant with mankind, and of Christ's work for us in the heavenly sanctuary become real, it was understood that "without holiness no one will see God" (Heb. 12:14)

Holiness in living is ONLY possible when one is surrendered to God in a total FAITH relationship with Him, allowing God to work His works in us. A holy lifestyle has as its objective the glory of God, that "in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. (1 Peter 4:11) Christ and His covenant provisions and ministry and plans must be central in our lives.

Notice that those who shine as stars forever and will receive the mark of approval by the MAN IN LINEN which we see in verse 6 and 7 of Daniel, and also in Ezekiel 9, are those in whom the Holy Spirit has awakened such clear view of the exceeding sinfulness of sin that they are represented as being in an agony, sighing and crying for all the abominations that are done under the guise of Christianity.

These may be called the "party spoilers" now, they may be labeled as "goody, goody fanatics" but the Bible tells us they will shine as stars forever.

THE ENDTIME PROPHECIES SEALED

12.4 But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end:

Daniel was honored by God as His ambassador, and was given many revelations of the mysteries of ages to come. His wonderful prophecies, as recorded by him in chapters 7 to 12 of the book bearing his name, were not fully understood even by the prophet himself; but before his life labors closed, he was given the blessed assurance that "at the end of the days"--in the closing period of this world's history--he would again be permitted to stand in his lot and place. It was not given him to understand all that God had revealed of the divine purpose. "Shut up the words, and seal the book," he was directed concerning his prophetic writings; these were to be sealed "even to the time of the end." (PK 547)

It was not the whole book of Daniel, which was sealed, for some of the portions were understood and were a blessing to believers for centuries. But that portion of the prophecies in chapters 7,8,10-12 which dealt with the last days were sealed. Chapter nine pointed to Christ's first coming and was one of the first prophecies to be understood. It was understood that the 70 weeks were 490 years (day for a year principle) and that they were fulfilled with Christ's first coming. But in the early centuries of Christianity, no one, though attempts were made, really understood the prophecies "for the time of the end".

The time of the end obviously is not the end of the world, for people are still "running to and fro" at the time of the end.

The time of the end, is when the three angels of Revelation 14 shout their warning messages, that the hour of judgment IS come, and soon Christ will come to execute that judgment.

Not till we reach this "time of the end" could a message concerning the judgment be proclaimed, based on the fulfillment of these prophecies. But at the time of the end, says the prophet, "many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased." Daniel 12:4.
"The prophecies present a succession of events leading down to the opening of the judgment" (GC 355).

The time of the end is when the three angels of Revelation 14 sound their startling message, after which Christ comes to "harvest the earth".

In the time of the end every divine institution is to be restored. The breach made in the law at the time the Sabbath was changed by man, is to be repaired. (See Daniel 7:25 and Isaiah 58:12) God's remnant people, standing before the world as reformers, are to show that the law of God is the foundation of all enduring reform (Rev. 14:12) and that the Sabbath of the fourth commandment is to stand as a memorial of creation, (Rev. 14:7) a constant reminder othe power of God.

We are living in the time of the end, as we will see from the time lines here in Daniel 12.

12:4 Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.

1 Timothy 2.4-6 Who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
who gave himself a ransom for all; the testimony [to be borne] in its own times.

God has an intense desire for all to be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth. Knowledge of the truth is an important part. God says: "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because they have rejected knowledge, I will also reject them,.. seeing they have forgotten the law of thy God" Hosea 4:6

The knowledge we are to understand includes Christ's work in the heavenly sanctuary. There is "one Mediator between God and me, the man Christ Jesus." His priestly work is done at the "appointed time".

The Book is Unsealed

12:4 Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.

Since 1798 the book of Daniel has been unsealed, knowledge of the prophecies has increased, and many have proclaimed the solemn message of the judgment near.

History shows that as the book was unsealed many were seen running to and fro, seeking in every possible way to warn the people of the coming judgment and to tell people of the glad news of salvation and soon coming of Jesus Christ. The three angel's messages of Revelation 14 are the message for "the time of the end". This "running to and fro" is to continue, as represented by the angel of Revelation 18 who combines the messages of the three angels of Rev. 14 and lightens the earth with the glory of God. Thus knowledge of heavenly things is to increase.

What happened in 1798 that caused the "unsealing"?

Indeed, it was as if a mysterious restriction concerning the understanding of these prophecies had at last been broken.

Historian David Ludlum writes:
"At the turn of the century many tomes of biblical exegesis came from New England presses and received a wide circulation. Though differing on minor points, all agreed that the "times of the prophecies" had arrived, that the present constituted the predicted Reign of Infidelity, and that the Second Coming of Christ and commencement of the Millennium were at hand". ("Social Ferment in Vermont, 1791-1850" 1948 page 38)
Not only were people writing a great number of volumes concerning the porphecies, in the New England, but the same was happening over in Europe.

What is now often termed "the religious awakening" swept in recurring waves over the people. In 1798 the Connecticut Missionary Society was organized. 1804 the Bible society. This was followed by other Bible and Missionary Societies.

In 1803 even a newspaper, "New Hampshire Gazette) ran a serial called the "Book of Antichrist" based on prophecy. The understanding that the papacy was the predicted power, and that, in accordance with the prophecy, it had been gravely wounded by the French Revolution was being printed in books, pamphlets, printed sermons, published reports, and periodical and newspaper columns.

Now a shift occured in the study of prophecy. It was felt that the symbols in Daniel 7 with it's 1260 day/years was pretty much understood, but what about Daniel 8, and it's 2300 day/years?
As people pondered this prophecy there arose, not only in Britain and Europe, but also in Africa and India, and especially in America several dedicated men, quite apart from each other, the conviction that the 2300 day/years would end sometime in the 1840's.

The message was being preached "Fear God and give Him glory, for the hour of His judgment has come, and worship Him who made the heavens and the earth."

The 1st angel's message, from Rev. 14:7 was sounding.

The most widely known preacher of this message was William Miller, yet he was not alone, thousands accepted the message and preached it with conviction. Now some may think it was only a small unnoticed group who proclaimed the end of the 2300 day/years, but the message rocked the nation. The 2300 days, and also the 1335 days all point to the "hour of God's judgment. But this was not fully understood, for even yet, the knowledge of these prophecies must increase in more fully.

12.5 Then I Daniel looked, and, behold, there stood other two, the one on this side of the bank of the river, and the other on that side of the bank of the river.
12.6 And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, How long shall it be to the end of these wonders?

Remember Daniel 10-12 is all one vision.
Chapter 10 began with Daniel standing on the bank of the river Tigris. When he looked up, there was a man dressed in linen, with a belt of the finest gold around his waist. His body like chrysolite, his face like lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze and his voice like the sound of a multitude. (Dan. 10:4-6)

This is the same person-- our Lord Jesus -- whom John saw in Revalation chapter one.
Jesus dress in the garments of a Priest.

Now Daniel sees two others with Him, angels, one on either side.

The whole setting also strongly resembles the ark of the covenant where two angels stand on either side of the Glory of God.

The Great River, the life giving fountain of living water available to the children of men for their salvation, comes from the throne of God and of the Lamb.

So in Daniel 12:5
Daniel has a glimpse of Christ in the Most Holy Phase of His Ministry. The two angels, (the covering cherubs)

The time of the end, is being portrayed, when Christ receives His kingdom during the court scene described in Daniel 7.

This is the time of the end when the breach made in the law is to be repaired, and the message of Christ's sanctuary ministry is to be preached to the world.

THE QUESTION

How long shall it be to the end of these wonders?

The question as seen in CONTEXT is
How long before the Christ goes in to receive His kingdom from the ancient of Days? How long will nations marshall against nations, before Christ enters that heavenly court where He receives the dominion, where He confesses the names of His people, and the final judgment of earth's destiny is made?

It is the same question as found in Daniel 8.

"How long the vision?" How long will all these powers be allowed freedom to trample on everything.

The answer was ....unto two thousand and three hundred days....understand, for at the time of the end is the vision...what shall be in the last end of the indignation: for at the time appointed the end shall be."

The prophecies present a succession of events leading down to the opening of the judgment. This is especially true of the book of Daniel. GC 355

It is at the time of the end, that the judgement sits and the books are opened that determine the end of sinful powers and the redemption of God's people.

12.7 And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever

The greatest oath which can be made, as Christ, with great solemnity and assurance declares that God's purposes will be done. Christ will meet His appointment.

Time, Times, and a Half

that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.

Christ speaks of a definate time period.

mow'ed mow'ed chetsiy
"Mow'ed" means an "appointed time"
"chetsiy" means "half or middle"

This is the same time period as Daniel 7:25 which is translated
"time, times and dividing of time".

Daniel 7.25
and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.
A time = 1 year, times = 2 years, dividing of times = 1/2 year. Thus three and half prophetic years, or 1260 prophetic days. This is identified as 1260 day/years.

We see the same time period in Rev. 12:7

"And to the woman ...where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent."

And when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these [time, times and half] shall be finished.

KALAH ---- to accomplish, be fulfilled, cease, consume, determine, be complete, end
NAPHATSTO ---- shatter, break, scatter, disperse,
YAD ------- the hand of power,
QODESHOF ---- holy
'AM ------- people, nations
KALAH ----- to accomplish, cease, consume, determine, be complete, end

So basically the verse reads,
Three and a half, "times" (1260 years) are appointed to fulfil the breaking and scattering of the hand of power of the holy people. P> What power is "appointed" a time to manifest it's destructive power against God's holy people?

We need only go back to the vision itself in Daniel 11.

11.33-36
They shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days. Now when they shall fall, they will be helped a little: but some who are not sincere will flatter them. And some of them of the wise shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed.

"A TIME APPOINTED" uses the same word "MOW'ED" as Daniel 12:7.

Daniel 7:25 which speaks of this same time period says, "He shall wear out the saints...they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing f time.

And who is causing this persecution of God's people, during this time alloted?

Who is this destroyer of God's people, in Daniel, the one who scatters and tries to break God's people?

Daniel 11

Daniel 8

Daniel 7

He who stands in the Glorious land with destruction in his power 11:16

He waxed great towards the pleasant land.
[this is in the early phase of the horn that started from smallness and grew exceedingly great, career.]
(8:9)

.

This is Rome while yet in it's pagan phase. Rome conquered Palestine and destroyed Jerusalem.

Compare with Daniel 9:26,
The prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary

"He that shall act deceitfully 11:23

Through his policy he shall cause craft (deceit) to prosper.

He has a mouth speaking great things (7:8)

"He that shall spoil plunder and devise his plans agains the strongholds 11:24

He shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper and practise and shall destroy the mighty (8:24P

He shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down and break it in pieces (7:23)

"His heart shall be against the holy covenant 11:28

It cast truth to the ground and practiced and prospered (8:12)

Thinks to change times and laws (7:25)

We have moved into the Roman papal stage as we compare these verse with the stout horn in Daniel 7

"He shall be grieved and return in rage against the holy covenant 11:30
"He shall return and show regard for those who forsake the holy covenant 11:30

He shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shll destroy many: He shall even stand up against the Prince of hosts. (8:25)

He shall speak words against the Most High and wear out the saints (7:25)

"He shall muster forces and defile the sanctuary 11:31

By Him the place of His Sanctuary was cast down. (8:11)
And an host (army) was given him. (8:12)

.

"He shall place the abomination of desolation 11:31

transgression of desolation (8:12,13)

..

"He shall corrupt with flattery those who do wickedly against the covenant 11:32

Understanding dark sentences (8:23

Spoke great things...The same made war against the saints and prevailed (7:21-21)

"He shall exalt and magnify himself above every god 11:36
"He shall speak blasphemies against the God of gods" 11:36

He magnified himself even to the Prince of the host (8:11)

He shall speak great things against the Most High (7:25)

He is called the "king of the North", the horn that grew exceedingly great, and also the stout horn atop the Roman beast..

2 Thess. 2:3,9 calls him the "man of sin" whose coming is after the working of Satan with power and signs and lying wonders.

Who is it that seeks to set his throne on the side of the north?

Isaiah 14.13
For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:

Yes, that is referring to Lucifer, turned Satan.
Revelation tells us more
The great dragon was hurled down-- that serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. (12:9)
And the dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority...the beast exercised his authority for forty-two months. (Rev. 13:2,5)
Notice how prophecy identifies this power by the consistant use of the 1260 day/years. (42 months = 1260 days)

Yes, it's the same power spoken of in Daniel 7, which in verse 25, persecutes the saints for "a time and times and half a time", (the same 1260 dya/years).

What we have here is a counterfeit worship system. Satan seeks to sit as god, and to do so, he sets up an earthly system of worship where people think they are worshipping God, when in actuality they worship "the dragon and the beast" (Rev. 13:3)

"The "man of sin" which is also styled "the mystery of iniquitey" "the son of perdition," and "that wicked" represents the papacy, which, as foretold in prophecy, was to maintain its supremacy for 1260 years. This period ended in 1798." GC 356

Daniel 7 clearly shows the judgment is called to take action against this beast, and to vindicate God's saints.

Judgment is to determine who the REAL people of God are!
There are many of God's children within all the denominations of Christian churches. While a system may be false, many sincere worshipers of God have resided therein. God knows the heart and will save those who are His.

"In the great day of final atonement and investigative judgment the only cases considered are those of the professed people of God. (GC 480)

The little horn on the beast, is not an atheistic power-- it is professedly a follower of God. Yet it has set itself above God's law, and thought to change it, and has placed itself between God and His people, it has persecuted and scattered God's Holy people.

Prophecy clearly identifies this power.
Modern theology seeks to hide it's identification.
Yet Daniel's prophecies CLEARLY point out that GOD IS JUDGE, not this power, for GOD WILL judge the imposters and vindicate His true follows. (See Daniel 7:7-10, 21-22)

The 1260 year time period is repeatedly given to make it perfectly clear that the greatest deceptions will not come from non-Christians but from Christianity itself.

The apostle Paul warned the church not to look for the coming of Christ in his day. "That day shall not come," he says, "except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed." 2 Thessalonians 2:3. Not till after the great apostasy, and the long period of the reign of the "man of sin," can we look for the advent of our Lord. The "man of sin," which is also styled "the mystery of iniquity," "the son of perdition," and "that wicked," represents the papal supremacy, which, as foretold in prophecy, was to maintain its supremacy for 1260 years. This period ended in 1798. The coming of Christ could not take place before that time. Paul tells us "that day" will not come untill after that appointed time, Daniel was shown it would last 1260 years-- down to the year 1798. It is this side of that time that the three angel's messages are to sound and prepare a people for Christ's return.

The three angel's message has never been given in past ages. Paul, as we have seen, did not preach it; he pointed into the then far-distant future for the coming of the Lord. The Reformers did not proclaim it. Martin Luther placed the judgment about three hundred years in the future from his day. But since 1798 the book of Daniel has been unsealed, knowledge of the prophecies has increased, and many have proclaimed the solemn message that the hour judgment of His Judgment HAS COME. (see GC 356)

The prophecies present a succession of events leading down to the opening of the judgment. This is especially true of the book of Daniel. The endtime judgment is the "converging point" of the time lines in Daniel. To understand this doctrine in it's Christ centered fulness, enables a person to go through the time of trouble such as never was. For they know WHO is their LORD and judge. "Let no man judge you," the bible tells us in several places, but "God will judge His people" (Heb. 10:30)He is the One Who offers full salvation and will determine who has accepted and followed Him.

The Man in Linen
12.7 And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever

The man clothed in linen is none other than Jesus Christ, as we showed by comparing Daniel 12:7 with Dan. 10:5-6 and Rev. 1:13-16.

Now let's turn to Revelation 10 where we have a similar depiction. Daniel 12 and Revelation 10 are closely related.

Revelation 10:1
And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire:
10.2 And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth,
10.3 And cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roars: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices.
10.4 And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not.
10.5 And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven,
10.6 And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer:
10.7 But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets.
10.8 And the voice which I heard from heaven spake unto me again, and said, Go and take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel which standeth upon the sea and upon the earth.
10.9 And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey.
10.10 And I took the little book out of the angel's hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter.
10.11 And he said unto me, You must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.

How clearly this describes the events of Daniel 12.
The heavenly Being is no less a personage than Jesus Christ. (SDABC vol 7, p. 971) The rainbow about His head is the promise of His covenant with mankind. Setting His right foot on the sea, and His left upon the dry land, shows His supreme power and authority over the whole earth. And once again The greatest oath which can be made, is made as Christ, with great solemnity and assurance declares that God's purposes will be done. Christ will meet His appointment. Time is no longer.

What does this mean-- TIME WILL BE NO LONGER?
And the book is "open", the emphasis on it being open suggest that it was sealed at one time.

Next we see John taking the book and eating it-- it was very sweet and pleasant.
And won't the announcement that time is no longer be sweet to anyone looking for the coming of the Lord?

A certain point in time had been reached. The sixth trumpet was past (Rev. 9:14-21) The seventh angel was about to sound his trumpet.

But before it sounds the sweetness of the book turns to bitterness. Why is it bitter?

Without doubt the "little book" refers to the sealed portion of the prophecy of Daniel because that is the only prophetic book that contains special instructions concerning TIME.

When the time of the end arrived great interest in the prophecies of Daniel were awakened, knowledge had increased concerning it. It was discovered that the 1260 years were fulfilled. It was discovered that the 1335 years and the 2300 years pointed to 1842-1844. They had reached the "end of the timelines". Therefore, when Christ said, "There shall be time no longer" He was refering to these timelines. How sweet the proclamation sounded, that Christ would come in 1844-- but that sweetness turned to bitterness as the great disappointment was experienced. Then they were told:

You must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.

John is told that "time is no longer" there is no more specified time which must pass, no more timelines as Christ is once again seen standing with uplifted hands-- this time with the book unsealed. The unsealing of the book is a sweet experience which ends in bitterness as the believers must go and preach again. The seventh trumpet must yet do it's work. And what takes place during the seventh trumpet?
Again we see that the timelines all point to the investigative judgment. For during the seventh trumpet "the time has come that the dead should be judged, and reward given to thy prophets and to the saints and to them that fear your name....and the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of His covenant.." Rev. 11:18-19

As it is in the book of Daniel, the judgment takes place after the 1260 day/years (Daniel 7:9-10,25) beginning at the end of the 2300 day/years of Daniel 8, and at the end of the 1335 day/years of Daniel 12. At the time appointed in 1844 the work of the judgment began. Both the living and the dead are to be judged "out of those things which were written in the books," (Rev. 20:12) for "the court was seated and the books were opened." (Daniel 7:10)

The ark of God's testament, with God's holy law under the mercy seat, is in the holy of holies, the second apartment of the sanctuary. In the ministration of the earthly tabernacle, which served "unto the example and shadow of heavenly things," this apartment was opened on the Great Day of Atonement at the end of the "spiritual" year. On this day the sanctuary was cleansed. Therefore the announcement that the temple of God was opened in heaven and the ark of His testament was seen points to the opening of the Most Holy Place of the heavenly sanctuary in 1844, at the end of the 2300 day/years. (See GC 433)

Daniel's Dilemma
12:8 Although I heard, I did not understand. Then I said, "My Lord, what shall be the end of these things?"

Did Christ simply tell Daniel that God's people would be scattered for three and a half to four literal years and then the end would come? If that was all there was to the message why would Daniel be so perplexed?

This part of the vision, where Christ stands over the water in His glory wearing His beautiful linen garments and declaring the time, times and half time, has Daniel totally perplexed.

He sees more than He can understand.

He wants to know the meaning of it all, and he wants to know that which is not revealed, that which so many since have attempted to know. These timelines only reach the time of the end, not the ultimate end. Jesus told his followers it is not for us to know when His coming will be-- again and again He said to "watch and pray" for you "know not the hour when the son of man comes".

"When Jesus ceases to plead for man, the cases of all are decided forever. This is the time of reckoning with his servants....Probation closes.... He distinctly states the suddenness of his coming. He (Christ) does not measure the time, lest we shall neglect a momentary preparation, and in our indolence look ahead to the time when we think he will come, and defer the preparation. "Watch ye therefore; for ye know not." Yet this uncertainty, and the suddenness at last, foretold, fails to quicken our watchfulness, and arouse us from stupidity to earnest wakefulness, for our expected Master.

"God has not revealed to us the time when this message will close, or when probation will have an end. Those things that are revealed we shall accept for ourselves and for our children; but let us not seek to know that which has been kept secret in the councils of the Almighty. RH.1894-10-09.010

But God has revealed when the time of the end is here-- and when that time comes the wise will understand that they are living in the "time of the end".

12:9 And He said, God your way, Daniel, for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end."

Don't worry, Daniel", that is in God's hands.

The vision will be understood in the last days.

Many Purified
Daniel 12:10 Many shall be purified, made white, and refined, but the wicked shall do wickedly; and noe of the wicked shall understand; but the wise will understand.

Jesus is our High Priest. He took upon Himself our sins, and died in our place, and now He is our Priest. Those who are purified and made white are those who look to Christ in the heavenly sanctuary, repent and confess their sins, crucify the old nature and walk in newness of life with Christ. God's commandment law is written upon their very thoughts and emotions. They have "washed their robes" in the blood of the Lamb.

The books of Daniel and Revelation were not written to gratify human curiosity about future day by day happenings, but rather their purpose is to urge Christ's followers to remain faithful to the eternal gospel and to receive that eternal cleansing and purifying in a world that pushes a false gospel and counterfeit religion.

Once again we go back to the main part of the vision in Daniel 11 to see the setting for this verse.

Daniel 12:10
Many shall be purified
and made white
and tried

but the wicked shall do
wickedly and none of the wicked shall understand.

Daniel 12:11
And from the time the daily
shall be taken away
and the abomination that makes desolation set up
1290 days

Daniel 11:34
Some shall fall (by sword, flame, captivity) to try them and to purify them and make them white, even to the time of the end, a time yet appointed.
Daniel 11:32
Such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt with flatteries but the people who know their God shall be strong.

11:31 Arms shall stand on his part and shall pollute the sanctuary of strength and shall take away the daily and they shall place the abomination that makes desolate.

These two passages are speaking of the same thing. Daniel 11 is speaking of the tribulation which God's people faced under the long years of papal dominance before the time of the end.

These are they

"who have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with Me in white, for they are worthy. He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels." Rev. 3:4,5

Through all those years of deception and error and persecution, God had His faithful ones who trusted in Him and kept His commandments. This same heaven-challenging deception will be suffered till the second appearing of Jesus, yet the focus of God's faithful is on Christ, and refusing to defile themselves with the moral pollution that prevails on every hand, they hold fast their integrity, they overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony. They partake of the divine nature and live a life of constant dependance upon the Savior. They look beyond earthly authorities, to the heavenly judgment to have their names forever inscribed in the Lamb's book of life.

The purification of the people of God comes about through trials. In the heat of the opposition and persecution the dross is separated from the true silver and gold and then it is seen who really serves God and who was just a nominal member. Only he who endures the trial will receive the crown of life.

The Daily and the Abomination
Daniel 12:11
And from the time the daily shall be taken away and the abomination that makes desolation set up 1290 days

Daniel 8.11-12
Yea, he magnified himself even to the prince of the host, and by him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down.
And an army was given him to oppose the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practiced, and prospered.
Daniel 11.31
And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that makes desolate.
Daniel 12.11
And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.

The Daily -- the hattamid.
A study of this word reveals that it was used in the connection of many activities priests performed in their daily work in the sanctuary. All of Daniel 8, where we see the first reference to this "taking away of the daily", is filled with sanctuary language.
The word "tamid" is quite common in the Bible and is usually used as an adjective before various continuous activities in the daily priestly work. It is used to qualify the burnt offerings, the "bread of Presence" (Ex. 25:30, Num 4:7) the burning lampstands (Ex. 27:20; lev. 24:2) the incense (Ex. 30:8) and the fire on the altar (Lev. 6:13).
In other words "tamid" or "daily/continual" refers to the continual work of the priests in the court and in the holy place of the sanctuary. It does not refer to the priests work in the Most Holy Place.

Please note that the word "sacrifice" in all these verses was supplied by the translators. It is not in the original writings. Also, Daniel does not use the word "tamid" like an adjective, he places the definite article (the) in front "hattamid" so it stands as a noun, NOR DOES DANIEL EVER use the word sacrifice in any of the above verses. It is THE DAILY ministry that is set aside.

The little horn of Daniel 8, which is an earthly power, is powerful enough to take, or lift off from, the heavenly Prince what belongs exclusively to Him. Christ's priesthood in the heavenly sanctuary is subplanted by an earthly priesthood.

There has been some debate on the term "take away" in Daniel 8:11, as the term used is "ruwm" which can have various meanings including "extol". However, the "ruwm" used in this verse is the "hophal" form which means "to be taken off". The little horn attempted to take off Christ's daily and place it upon itself.
The other two verses which speak of the "taking away" of the daily (Daniel 11:31 and 12:11) use the word "cuwr" which means "to cause to turn aside, cause to depart, remove, take away, put away, depose, reject, take away". So there really is no doubt that this power, in trying to take off Christ's daily and place it upon themselves were rejecting the true ministry and pushing it aside.

Yes, when the Roman church, beginning with Pope Leo I, began claiming that the papal position was the continuation of Peter's "STONE" upon which Christ built His church, they "cast down the "place" of Christ's sanctuary. For Christ is the Chief Cornerstone, not Peter nor any who claim to be his successors, upon Christ the church is built, He is the true FOUNDATION. When Rome claimed "countinual and absolute" authority through Peter, over the spirituality of the people, and claimed to hold "the keys" of eternal destiny by their supposed power to forgive or refuse to forgive, they usurpt Christ's "daily, countinual" ministry and rejected the true.

This taking away and putting aside of Christ's daily ministry, is done with an "army". That is, this power uses an army to force people to look to itself for "priestly absolutions" from "transgression". This system places itself between the people and Christ's heavenly ministry so people look to this earthly system for forgiveness and entrance to salvation, not to Christ. However, it can never forgive anyone, thus it is the ultimate assualt on Christ's salvation.

Was there a time before the beginning of the 1260 years when the papacy came into possession of an army which it used to set up it's authority over spiritual matters?

Indeed there was!

Here's the history

In 508, Clovis, King of the Franks, was declared the "eldest son of the church".

Many historians declare that this was the "death" knell to paganism and the triumph of the Christianity. It was even taught that the "daily" was "paganism". BUT no, paganism was not "taken away" it was actually "Christianized" while true Christianity received a deadly blow.

Every nation or peoples in the realms reached by the Catholic church, even if, and especially if, Christians, that dared believe differently were under fear of persecution from the "armies" supporting Rome.

The Abomination is Placed

The "taking away of the daily" and the setting up of the "abomination" are not the same thing. By “lifting off” Christ’s work and attributing that work to itself, this power in actuality rejected the TRUE MINISTRY of Christ and pushed it aside. By attributing the "daily" or "continual" to itself, this power prepared the way for the abomination to be set up in the Christian church.
The two events are not the same, one prepares the way for the second. When taken literally the text says, the daily is abolished "with the purpose" of establishing in its place the "abomination that causes desolation". (Dan. 12:11; 11:31)
Christ's "daily" was "lifted off" usurped and rejected in 508 A.D.
-- when the papacy received it's "army".

But what is the ABOMINATION that was set up in the place of Christ's daily?

The original word used in Daniel for
Abomination is #8251 (shiqquwts)
which means:
detestable thing or idol, abominable thing, abomination, idol, detested thing

We see the word used thus in scripture:

1 Kings 11.5,7
For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.
Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon.

Daniel uses the word three times:
...And on the wing of abominations (shiqquwts) shall be one who makes desolate (shamem), Even until the consummation, (kalah) [full end] which is determined, Is poured out on the desolate (shamem)." (9:27)
...and shall take away the daily, and they shall place the abomination (shiqquwts) that maketh desolate (shamem). (11:31)
...from the time the daily is taken away, and the abomination (shiqquwts) that maketh desolate (shamam) set up (12:11)

Daniel 8 has a close parallel How long the vision [concerning] the daily, and the transgression of desolation (shamam), to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot? (8:13) Jesus links the Greek word for "abominations" #946 with the word "abominations" in Daniel. Matt.24.15-16
When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand ) Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:
Luke 13.14
But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains:
And note Revelation's use of the word. Rev. 17.4-5
And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:
And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.

The abomination IS FALSE/PAGAN WORSHIP.
It is better translated as the "desolating sacrilege".

How was the "abomination" set up? (See The 1260 Days, for more historical details)

In summery Imperial Rome legally gave it's seat in Rome to the Papacy. Imperial Rome metamorphasized into Papal Rome.

According to Croly, in the “Apocalypse of St. John,” pages, 167,168, “Justinian wrote to the pope in 533,

“We have made no delay in subjecting and uniting to Your Holiness all the priests of the whole East…We cannot suffer that anything which relates to the state of the church, however manifest and unquestionable, should be moved, without the knowledge of your Holiness, who are THE HEAD OF ALL THE HOLY CHURCHES” Justinian, according to Bruce Shelley, in (“Church History” p. 146 ,147) “never distinguished Roman state tradition from Christianity. He considered himself to be completely a Roman emperor and just as fully a Christian emperor. Here lay the source of his whole theory, the unity of the empire and the Christian religion….The state itself was conceived to be the only community established by God, and it embraced the whole life of man. ..the mission of the pious emperor as “the maintenance of the Christian faith in its purity and the protection of the Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church from any disturbance.”

By incorporating into the code of laws the headship of the pope over all religion, the Imperial Roman Emperor, Justinian, set in place the POWER that would rule religious thought for 1260 years. This "law" went into effect when the Imperial Armies recaptured Rome from the control of the Goths in 538 A.D, and placed it under Roman law! Roman law said the Pope was the ultimate authority on all things religious, (remember there was no distinction between religious and "the whole life" of people) with the mandate to hunt out "heretics" and get rid of them.

Yet what was the religion of Rome which was now being enforced?

God's Sabbath had been replaced by the day of the Sun.
Saints were being prayed to.
Relics, and monastic deprivations, were supposedly of salvic value.
But the bottom line was, that this power had attributed to itself Christ's ministry of salvation, it pointed to itself as THE ROCK OF SALVATION, supposedly through Peter, yet it could NOT SAVE, only Christ, the true ROCK OF SALVATION can save, thus the taking away of the daily made room for the abomination that makes desolate to rule and grow, while the people with truth hid in the "wilderness".

Time Lines

Daniel 12:11 "And from the time the daily is taken away, and the abomination of desolation is set up one thousand two hundred and ninety days.
Daniel 12:12 Blessed is he who waits, and come to the one thousand three hunred and thirty-five days."

Here is a chart to show what we learned in our study so far:

508-----538----------------------------------------------1798-------1843-1844

------------[---------------1260 years----------------------]

[---------------------------1290 years----------------------]

508 The daily is taken away from Christ and assumed by the Papal system, and an army is given him to enforce his mandates.

538 The abomination is legally set up, by law, thanks to Justinian's code.

1779 Power to use the state is legally removed from the Papal System, the abomination is no longer set up by law, thanks to Napoleon's new law code.

1843-1843 The message goes forth with a loud voice, "THE HOUR OF HIS JUDGMENT IS COME",
The truth of Christ's second coming is restored, the truth of the sanctuary is restored, the heavenly coart is in session, (Dan. 7) the sanctuary is being cleansed (Dan. 8) the three angels with heaven's last message of mercy are sounding (Rev.14). We are living in the time of the end. Blessed are the dead from henceforth! (Rev. 14:13) Even though opposition rises here on earth, they KNOW their case is in the hands of the supreme court of heaven!

The prophetic period of 1290 years began in 508; the 1260 years began in 538, during this time the law of God was changed, the Sabbath of the decalogue was trampled under foot, the reading of the Bible was suppressed and could witness only in "sackcloth". Both the law of God and the saints of God were bound for "a time, times, and half" by the power which exalted itself above Christ and assumed Christ's daily ministry.
The persecution was fierce attempting to "break" the power of God's people, it scattered them to the mountains and caves.

But in the time of the end both the law of God and the people were restored. Since 1798 the Word of God has been freely circulated among the people. The prophecies have been studied, the judgment message of Revelation 14 has been proclaimed, and in 1844, the light shone from the sanctuary above revealing the true Sabbath of God.

There is a blessing pronounced upon those who come to the end of the 1335 days, for the seal has been removed from the prophecies, and they are understood. Christ and HIS sanctuary ministry for our redemption can be understood, God's law is fully revealed with HIS GRACE to enable us "in HIS righteousness" to keep His commandments.

Stand in your lot

Daniel 12:13 But you, Daniel, go your way till the end, for you shall rest, and will arise and stand in your lot at the end of the days.

The first time we see the word "lot" in the Bible it is in connection with the day of atonement!

They cast lots over the two goats. (Lev. 16:8-10)

The next time we see the word is in (Numbers 26:52; 33:54; 34:13; 36:2-4 Joshua 13:6; 14:2; 15:1; 16:1; 17:1 and more) it is speaking of divinding the land by "lot" for their inheritance, and the Israelites inherited their "lot".

In Joshua 18 to 21 each of the twelve tribes are assigned their "lot" or inheritance.

Thus the primary meaning of "stand in your lot" would refer to the inheritance.

Daniel is being "dismissed" by the heavenly messager, and told to go his way, (live out his life) and then he will rest (namely in the grave) and rise again. He is given the assurance that he will stand in his lot, he will rise again and receive his inheritance, even though, the present life ends in death.

When is that "lot" assigned?

Compare Daniel 12 with Daniel 7
There we also have the 1260 years of oppression--
Then we have the judgment seated in the heavenly courtroom.
The results of that judgment determine who receives an inheritance and who does not.
--the beast's dominion is taken away and it is destroyed. (7:26)
--the saints are judged favourably and they gain possession of the kingdom. (7:22)

There in Daniel 7, the prophet sees the saints receive the inheritance.

So Daniel is now assured that he will rise and stand in his lot and receive his inherited "lot".

Each person has a case pending at the bar of God. Each must meet the great Judge face to face. How important, then, that every mind contemplate often the solemn scene when the judgment shall sit and the books shall be opened, when, with Daniel, every individual must stand in his lot, at the end of the days. GC.488

However, there is a secondary way of looking at "Daniel standing in his lot".

His message was also "tucked away" "sealed", but now, to-day, is standing in his lot, sounding the message that the time of the end is here, and we are to give him place to speak to the people.
