Did They Begin at Sinai and End at the Cross,
OR
Are They God's Eternal Standard For Mankind?
The commandments before Sinai The reason we are in a world filled with suffering, pain and death is because God's law was pushed aside. Satan rebelled against God's law, and then dragged Eve and Adam with him in this rebellion. Satan claimed God's law was not necessary and to be bound by it was a yoke and deprived intelligent beings of reaching their full potential. Satan's rebellion and it's outworkings in this world is a lesson to the universe through all coming ages as to the nature of sin and its terrible results. The working out of Satan's anti-law rule, its effects on both men and angels, will prove forever that God's law is just and good, placed for the well being of all the creatures He has made. God's immutable law stands forever. At Sinai this law was spoken in ten brief "WORDS" yet it's principles reach into the very depths of a person's moral character.
The commandments according to Jesus
The commandments according to the Apostles
The principles of Love in both Old and New Testament as bases of commandments
1. Thou shalt have no other God's before me.-- | Lucifer broke this commandment and started the misery called sin Isaiah 14:12-14 The first human sin involved seeking to make self god, rather than making God first. It also involved putting Satan's word above God's word, thus choosing the fallen angel above God. Paul calls Satan "the god of this world" 2Cor. 4:4--
Yet, by accepting Lucifer's lie, and attempting to make self, god, mankind fell far below God's ideal for him. | ||||||||||||
2.That shalt not make for yourselves any graven images or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
| Making graven images causes people to worship the created, rather than the creator. God called Abraham to leave his relatives because idol worship had become part of their lives. Joshua 24:2-3 Then we see Jacob going back to Abraham's kinsmen and married Rachel and Leah. When they left, Rachel took her father's "gods". Gen. 31:34
Next we see Jacob asking his family to get rid of all their idols before they go to Bethel for a special worship of the true God.
Genesis 35:2-4

3. | Job lived before Moses. Job knew that to curse God was sin. Job 1:5
Job 2:9-10

4.And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
To sanctify and hallow a day means to set it apart for holy use. So God's "Commandments," "Statutes," and "laws" were known to Abraham hundreds of years before Moses. And why not? Abraham could have heard it from Shem, who heard it from Methusalah, who heard it from Adam, who heard it from God.
Now let's back up a little in the history of Israel, to a time before they arrived at Sinai, before God revealed to them the commandments from the mountain top, before He made the covenant with them. Exodus 16.23-30 This is that which the LORD said, Tomorrow is the rest of the holy Sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake to day, and cook that you will cook today; and that which is left over store for yourselves to be kept until the morning. .. And [the next day] Moses said, Eat that today; for today is the Sabbath unto the LORD: today you shall not find it in the field. Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the Sabbath, in it there shall be none. And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none. And the LORD said unto Moses, HOW LONG REFUSE YOU TO KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS AND MY LAWS? Apparently the commandments and laws, as well as the Sabbath were already known before Sinai, for why else would God reprimand them for not keeping His commandments and laws?
The critics build a case against the Sabbath because the Bible does not specifically say Abraham, Isaac, Noah, etc. kept the seventh day. However, no mention is found in the book of Joshua, nor in Judges, nor Ruth, nor in first Samuel, nor second Samuel, nor in first Kings that people observed the Sabbath. It is not until we reach the book of second Kings that the Sabbath is mentioned again. Does this mean none of the judges or people kept the Sabbath after they entered the promised land, during all those years, even though it was after Sinai?
After the flood, the descendants of Noah centered their civilization in the Mesopotamia region and there, in ancient writings, we see the perversion of God's Sabbath. It became a day when the "gods" rested, and people were required to work hard to appease the gods. However, the true Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath (Mark 2:27) and God's people, no matter their position as ruler or servant, were to rest and delight themselves in the Lord upon that day. (Exodus 20:10 Isaiah 58:13). The very fact that the 7th day Sabbath was so perverted in the early Mesopotamian culture, shows that it was known.
In the book of Genesis and Job the numerous circumsantial evidences to the existence of a seven day week (Gen. 7:4,10; 8:10,12; 29:27; 50:10; and Job 2:13) presupposes the existance of the Sabbath for the Sabbath is the foundation of the weekly cycle which is NOT based on any natural cycle.
Genesis 28.7
Before Sinai the whole social society upheld the respect of children for their Father and Mother. Even fully grown and mature men still respected the leadership role of their fathers.
Cain was first reproved for his anger. After he yielded himself up to his anger and killed his brother, Cain was cursed.
Genesis 4:5-6
Genesis 2.23-24 God "withheld" Abimelech from the "sin" of adultery. Why would it be sinning against God, if God had no law against it? Gen. 20:6,7 Joseph knew adultery was sinning against God.Genesis 39:8-9
Job followed the whole principle of this commandment, and kept himself for his wife alone! Job 31:1, 9-11 Job 24:14-16,18 Joseph's brothers knew stealing was wrong, they were ready to take the death penalty if any of them were found to be thieves. Genesis 44:8-9 The first sin involved Eve and Adam, taking something that was not theirs to take.
Job 27:4 My lips shall not speak wickedness, nor my tongue utter deceit.
The Chinese language dates back about 4500 years to roughly the time when the dispersion at the tower of Babal had just sent new linguistic groups over the earth. So the Chinese developed a written language system of word-pictures, but this necessitates a common knowledge base in order for the picture symbols to be understood. Research points to this "common knowledge" base, to be the same history as contained in the stories of Genesis.
The word FORBIDDEN has an abbreviated character for God and two trees! |
The Ten Commandments were already in force long before they were officially given to Israel at Mount Sinai. They did not originate at Sinai. "Sin is lawlessness" (I John 3:4) or as it says in the KJ "sin is the transgression of the law". Words based on the root word, "sin" are used 9 times in Genesis, and 16 times in the Book of Job (NKJ). How could there be sin if there was no law, since "sin is not imputed when there is no law?" (Rom 5:13).
Elihu (one of Job's friends) said, "Behold God is mighty...He also opens their ear to instruction, and commands that they turn from iniquity. If they obey and serve Him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures. But if they do not obey, they shall perish by the sword and they shall die [as one] without knowledge" (Job 36:5,10-12). If, as some say, the people in Job's day did not know God's law, how could they obey Him? If those who disobeyed would perish like those that had no knowledge of God and His ways, then they must have had knowledge of God and His laws.
Now, let's see how Jesus related the ten commandments.
Matthew 15.19,20
For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, [Thou shalt not covet]
murders, [Thou shalt not kill]
adulteries, fornications, [Thou shalt not commit adultery]
thefts, [Thou shalt not steal]
false witness, [Thou shalt not bear false witness]
blasphemies: [Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain]
These are the things which defile a man..
1. Thou shalt have no other God's before me.-- | Jesus speaks in Revelation: Revelation 22.13-14 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. Matthew 22:37
Matt. 6.24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Matt. 6.33
In another place Jesus points a young man to the ten commandments as God's law, listing the "love your neighbor" ones. The young man replies that he kept them all, but Jesus knows the first commandment is being broken. Money is the the young man's god. Sell your things and follow Me, Jesus says. But the young man turned away. The Greatest commandment is: 2.That shalt not make for yourselves any graven images or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
| Matthew 4:10 Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. John 4:23
Matt. 6.19-21
Mark 10:24-25
Luke 12.19-22,31
Many people think that
they have God when they have an abundance of money and
possessions; they trust in them and feel secure. Yet what is their god?
Mammon is what Christ calls it, i.e., money and possessions, on which they set their
hearts. This is the most common idol on earth, one which Christ continually warns against.
Education, power, favored friendship, and prestige is also another god people bow too.
Yet all who look to these things for their security and meaning in life, place their heart and
trust elsewhere than in the true God, they look to these things rather than looking to God and seeking from Him all that gives meaning for life.
Reading Christ's words shows how much these first two commandments
require, namely, that a persons' entire heart and all his confidence be
placed in God alone, and in nothing else. Anything less is idolatry.
When we take Christ's Name upon ourselves and call ourselves Christians, we either allow Christ to show Himself through us, or we take His name in vain.
Matt. 5.16 John 13.35 Matt. 6.46-47
Matt. 5.34, 37
And he said unto them, The sabbath was made [created] for man [not just Jews, but for mankind], and man was not made [created] for the sabbath: Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath. Luke 4:16 Matthew 12.11-12 Jesus, prophecying concerning the fall of Jerusalem and also of end of the world issues, states:
Matthew 24.20 Christ invited people to His rest on a Sabbath day. Matthew 11.28-30 Matthew 12.1-3 The invitation in the text above is in the immediate context of two Sabbath episodes (chapter 12). On the Sabbath they ate-- corn from the field. Jesus justifies their actions by refering to the temple bread. The connection suggests that Christ the bread of life, is very much part of the Sabbath, and as we come apart to rest with Him on the Sabbath He feeds us with spiritual food. The following text in Mark is not specifically about the Sabbath but Jesus recognizes the need which we as human beings have, to literally physically come apart from the routines of life and rest. Again we see the connection of "resting" and "eating", being renewed physically and spiritually. All through the NT, Christ upholds the Sabbath as a day of restoration, a day to reach out in helpful acts, to others.

Jesus also explains the full meaning of the command.
Matt. 5.21-24
Matthew 5.43,44 Matthew 26:52 Matthew 19.8,9
Matthew 19.4-6
Matthew 5.8 Matthew 5: 27- Matthew 5:32 Mark 10:11 John 10.10 All through the teachings of Jesus we see the concept of GIVING to others in sharp contrast to the natural grasping, get for myself, tendencies of the carnal nature. To steal is the very opposite of the concept of giving which Christ teaches.
John 8.44
Jesus also explains the full meaning of the command. Matthew 12.34-37 The saddest defiance against this commandment was manifested against the Son of God Himself. Matthew 26.59 Mark 14.56

The Principles of Love in the Commandments
As we have seen, God's moral law is eternal, it was there long before Sinai, nor did it "fade away" after the cross along with the ceremonial laws.
Yet some will say this moral law is abolished and replaced by a new law of love. We must ask ourselves, is the above law in opposition to love? No, never! It is the law of love, love God supremely and love others every bit as much as yourself. This concept is woven all through the Bible as well. God's laws were always rooted and grounded in the principles of LOVE.
Duet. 6.4-6
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:
Duet. 11.13
Where was God's law to be? What were the commandments they were to heed?
Exactly what it says in the New Testament-- it was no new command, to replace God's moral law, no God's moral law is based on the law of LOVE. Duet. 30:6 And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live.
Here we see the same message Paul gives in Colossians 2:11, that God wants the spiritual circumcision that sets believers free from the power of sin.
Joshua 22.5
Again we see what God's commandments really were-- to love God, to cleave to Him, to serve Him and to obey Him.
Duet. 19.17
Duet. 19:18
Psalm 82.3-4
What were the big reasons Israel lost the favor and protection of God and fell to their enemies It was because they did not follow the laws of love, they did not love the Lord, and they oppressed the poor instead of helping them, it was because they took advantage of one another, and mercy and justice was cast aside. Jeremiah 2:13
Jeremiah 2:32
Many more texts could be quoted to show that the sins God held against Israel, were sins of lack of real love; |
