The reason we are in a world filled with suffering, pain and death is because God's law was pushed aside. Satan rebelled against God's law, and then dragged Eve and Adam with him in this rebellion. Satan claimed God's law was not necessary and to be bound by it was a yoke and deprived intelligent beings of reaching their full potential. Satan's rebellion and it's outworkings in this world is a lesson to the universe through all coming ages as to the nature of sin and its terrible results. The working out of Satan's anti-law rule, its effects on both men and angels, will prove forever that God's law is just and good, placed for the well being of all the creatures He has made.

God's immutable law stands forever. At Sinai this law was spoken in ten brief "WORDS" yet it's principles reach into the very depths of a person's moral character.

The Commandments Before Sinai

1.

Thou shalt have no other God's before me.--


Lucifer broke this commandment and started the misery called sin

Isaiah 14:12-14
How are you fallen from heaven, O Lucifer...You said in your heart...I will exalt my throne above the stars of God...I will be like the most High

The first human sin involved seeking to make self god, rather than making God first. It also involved putting Satan's word above God's word, thus choosing the fallen angel above God. Paul calls Satan "the god of this world" 2Cor. 4:4--
Gen. 3:5
The serpent says, "God knows that in the day you eat of this tree, your eyes shall be opened, and you will be like gods...

Yet, by accepting Lucifer's lie, and attempting to make self, god, mankind fell far below God's ideal for him.
The ideal is to acknowledge God as supreme

Genesis 17:1
The LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.

2.

That shalt not make for yourselves any graven images or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

Making graven images causes people to worship the created, rather than the creator.

God called Abraham to leave his relatives because idol worship had become part of their lives.

Joshua 24:2-3
Your fathers...even Terah, the father of Abraham and the father of Nachor, they served other gods. And I took your father Abraham....

Then we see Jacob going back to Abraham's kinsmen and married Rachel and Leah. When they left, Rachel took her father's "gods".

Gen. 31:34
Rachel had taken the images

Next we see Jacob asking his family to get rid of all their idols before they go to Bethel for a special worship of the true God.

Genesis 35:2-4
Then Jacob said unto his household, and all those with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments...and they gave to Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand and their earrings in their ears ...and Jacob buried them under the oak which was by Shechem.

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

Job lived before Moses.
Job knew that to curse God was sin.

Job 1:5
Job...offered burnt offerings ...saying "It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts.

Job 2:9-10
Then his wife said to him, Do you still maintain your integrity? Curse God and die. But he said to her, You speak as one of the foolish women....In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

REMEMBER
the Sabbath day to keep it holy,
six days you shall labor and do all your work
but the SEVENTH-DAY is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. You shall not do any work in it, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your man-servant, nor your maid-servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates; For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.

Genesis 2:2-3
And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

To sanctify and hallow a day means to set it apart for holy use.

(Genesis 26:5)
"Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws."

So God's "Commandments," "Statutes," and "laws" were known to Abraham hundreds of years before Moses. And why not? Abraham could have heard it from Shem, who heard it from Methusalah, who heard it from Adam, who heard it from God.

Now let's back up a little in the history of Israel, to a time before they arrived at Sinai, before God revealed to them the commandments from the mountain top, before He made the covenant with them.

Exodus 16.23-30
This is that which the LORD said, Tomorrow is the rest of the holy Sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake to day, and cook that you will cook today; and that which is left over store for yourselves to be kept until the morning. ..
And [the next day] Moses said, Eat that today; for today is the Sabbath unto the LORD: today you shall not find it in the field.
Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the Sabbath, in it there shall be none.
And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none.
And the LORD said unto Moses, HOW LONG REFUSE YOU TO KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS AND MY LAWS?

Apparently the commandments and laws, as well as the Sabbath were already known before Sinai, for why else would God reprimand them for not keeping His commandments and laws?

The critics build a case against the Sabbath because the Bible does not specifically say Abraham, Isaac, Noah, etc. kept the seventh day. However, no mention is found in the book of Joshua, nor in Judges, nor Ruth, nor in first Samuel, nor second Samuel, nor in first Kings that people observed the Sabbath. It is not until we reach the book of second Kings that the Sabbath is mentioned again. Does this mean none of the judges or people kept the Sabbath after they entered the promised land, during all those years, even though it was after Sinai?

After the flood, the descendants of Noah centered their civilization in the Mesopotamia region and there, in ancient writings, we see the perversion of God's Sabbath. It became a day when the "gods" rested, and people were required to work hard to appease the gods. However, the true Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath (Mark 2:27) and God's people, no matter their position as ruler or servant, were to rest and delight themselves in the Lord upon that day. (Exodus 20:10 Isaiah 58:13). The very fact that the 7th day Sabbath was so perverted in the early Mesopotamian culture, shows that it was known.

In the book of Genesis and Job the numerous circumsantial evidences to the existence of a seven day week (Gen. 7:4,10; 8:10,12; 29:27; 50:10; and Job 2:13) presupposes the existance of the Sabbath for the Sabbath is the foundation of the weekly cycle which is NOT based on any natural cycle.

Honor Your Father and Mother that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

Genesis 9:21-26
Ham's disrespectful reaction to his father Noah's condition brought a curse upon him. His brothers moved with respect to protect their father, and they were blessed.

Genesis 28.7
And that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother

Before Sinai the whole social society upheld the respect of children for their Father and Mother. Even fully grown and mature men still respected the leadership role of their fathers.

6.
You will not kill.

In the story of Cain and Abel we see the principles already in place concerning this commandment.

Cain was first reproved for his anger. After he yielded himself up to his anger and killed his brother, Cain was cursed.

Genesis 4:5-6
And Cain was very angry...and the LORD said to Cain, Why are you angry...sin lies at your door.
Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him, And the LORD said...now you are cursed from the earth which opened her mouth to receive your brother's blood.

7.
You will not commit adultery.

The principles of this commandment are in place from the very creation of man and woman.

Genesis 2.23-24
Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

God "withheld" Abimelech from the "sin" of adultery. Why would it be sinning against God, if God had no law against it?

Gen. 20:6,7
"I also withheld you from sinning against me: therefore I did not permit you to touch her, Now restore to the man his wife...if you do not restore her, you will die."

Joseph knew adultery was sinning against God.

Genesis 39:8-9
"You are his [Potapher's] wife how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin agaist God?"

Job followed the whole principle of this commandment, and kept himself for his wife alone!

Job 31:1, 9-11
I made a covenant concerning my eyes, why then should I look with lust upon a maid?...
If my heart was enticed by a woman, or if I have lurked at my neighbor's door, then let my wife serve another, and let another bend over her. For this is a heinous crime, it is iniquity that is judged."

8.
You will not steal.

Job not only identifies stealing as sin but several other commandments in this passage:

Job 24:14-16,18
"The murderer arises at dawn; He kills the poor and the needy, And at night he is as a thief. The eye of the adulterer waits for the twilight, Saying, 'No eye will see me'; And he disguises his face. In the dark they break into houses which they marked for themselves in the daytime; They do not know the light. ...their portion is cursed in the earth.

Joseph's brothers knew stealing was wrong, they were ready to take the death penalty if any of them were found to be thieves.

Genesis 44:8-9
"how then should we steal out of thy lord's house silver or gold? If you find this cup in anyone of these, your servants' possession, let him die.

The first sin involved Eve and Adam, taking something that was not theirs to take.

9.
You will not bear false witness against they neighbor.

Deceptiveness has been the devil's trademark from the beginning, for "he is a liar and the father of it". (John 8:44) Lying and bearing false witness was all part of the first sin in the garden of Eden. Just see how God's word is not only contradicted, but false witness insinuating that God is withholding a great blessing is made.

Gen. 2:17
God said, "In the day you eat of that tree dying you shall die."
Genesis 3:4-5
The serpent (satan) said to the woman, you will not surely die, God knows that when you eat of it, then your eyes will be opened and you will be as gods, knowing good and evil."

Job 27:4

My lips shall not speak wickedness, nor my tongue utter deceit.

10.
You will not covet your neighbor's house, you will not covet your neighor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his oxen, nor his donkeys, nor anything that belongs to your neighbor.

Coveting is the root of most sin.
Lucifer coveted God's position. (Isaiah 14:13-14)
Eve coveted the forbidden fruit, which led to eating it.

The Chinese language dates back about 4500 years to roughly the time when the dispersion at the tower of Babal had just sent new linguistic groups over the earth. So the Chinese developed a written language system of word-pictures, but this necessitates a common knowledge base in order for the picture symbols to be understood. Research points to this "common knowledge" base, to be the same history as contained in the stories of Genesis.
For instance, the word COVET, utilizes two trees and a woman. What does a woman and trees have to do with "covet"? Yes, the first sin involved coveting. Eve had access to the tree of life, but coveted the forbidden tree of knowledge of good and evil.

The word FORBIDDEN has an abbreviated character for God and two trees! ("The Discovery of Genesis" by C.H. Kang)


The Ten Commandments were already in force long before they were officially given to Israel at Mount Sinai. They did not originate at Sinai. "Sin is lawlessness" (I John 3:4) or as it says in the KJ "sin is the transgression of the law". Words based on the root word, "sin" are used 9 times in Genesis, and 16 times in the Book of Job (NKJ). How could there be sin if there was no law, since "sin is not imputed when there is no law?" (Rom 5:13).

Elihu (one of Job's friends) said, "Behold God is mighty...He also opens their ear to instruction, and commands that they turn from iniquity. If they obey and serve Him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures. But if they do not obey, they shall perish by the sword and they shall die [as one] without knowledge" (Job 36:5,10-12). If, as some say, the people in Job's day did not know God's law, how could they obey Him? If those who disobeyed would perish like those that had no knowledge of God and His ways, then they must have had knowledge of God and His laws.

Now, let's see how Jesus related the ten commandments.

The Commandments According to Jesus

Jesus said:
Matthew 19:17 "keep the commandments".
The young man wants to know WHICH ONES and Jesus points him to the Decalogue---
Matthew 19.18-19
He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said,
Thou shalt do no murder,
Thou shalt not commit adultery,
Thou shalt not steal,
Thou shalt not bear false witness,
Honour thy father and thy mother:
and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Another time Jesus said:

Matthew 15.19,20
For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, [Thou shalt not covet]
murders, [Thou shalt not kill]
adulteries, fornications, [Thou shalt not commit adultery]
thefts, [Thou shalt not steal]
false witness, [Thou shalt not bear false witness]
blasphemies: [Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain]
These are the things which defile a man..

Thou shalt have no other God's before me.--


Jesus speaks in Revelation: Revelation 22.13-14
I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

Matthew 22:37
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind."

Matt. 6.24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Matt. 6.33
Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness

In another place Jesus points a young man to the ten commandments as God's law, listing the "love your neighbor" ones.
Luke 18.20
You know the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.

The young man replies that he kept them all, but Jesus knows the first commandment is being broken. Money is the the young man's god. Sell your things and follow Me, Jesus says. But the young man turned away.

The Greatest commandment is:
Matthew 22.37
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 22.38 This is the first and great commandment.

Matthew 4:10
Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

John 4:23
But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such to be his worshippers.

Matt. 6.19-21
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Mark 10:24-25
Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

Luke 12.19-22,31
[The rich man whose barns are full] Says to his soul, Soul, you have much goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
But God said unto him, You are a fool, for this night your soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which you hast provided? That's how it is with the one that stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
And he [Jesus] said to his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Don't focus on preserving your life, on whether you'll have enough to eat; or whether you will be able to dress up the body....
But rather seek the kingdom of God, and He will supply what you need.

Many people think that they have God when they have an abundance of money and possessions; they trust in them and feel secure. Yet what is their god? Mammon is what Christ calls it, i.e., money and possessions, on which they set their hearts. This is the most common idol on earth, one which Christ continually warns against.

Education, power, favored friendship, and prestige is also another god people bow too. Yet all who look to these things for their security and meaning in life, place their heart and trust elsewhere than in the true God, they look to these things rather than looking to God and seeking from Him all that gives meaning for life.

Reading Christ's words shows how much these first two commandments require, namely, that a persons' entire heart and all his confidence be placed in God alone, and in nothing else. Anything less is idolatry.

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

Matthew 6:9
Our Father in heaven hallowed (holy), be your name

When we take Christ's Name upon ourselves and call ourselves Christians, we either allow Christ to show Himself through us, or we take His name in vain.

Matt. 5.16
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

John 13.35
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

Matt. 6.46-47
And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? Whosoever comes to me, and hears my sayings, and does them, I will show you to whom he is like: [a man who built on solid rock]

Matt. 5.34, 37
But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne...let your yes, be yes, and your no, be no.

God's original law is upper most in Jesus teachings, as He lifts it out from under the corruption which had distorted it. Christ establishes the human and universal value of the Sabbath by reverting back to its very origin, to creation. The verb "made-ginornai" alludes to the original "making" of the Sabbath. The word for "man" "anthropos" shows the Sabbath at creation was not made for God's benefit, but for man. Jesus also shows the Sabbath is to ensure physical and spiritual well-being, and is not to be a rule dominated drudgery.

Mark 2.27-28

And he said unto them, The sabbath was made [created] for man [not just Jews, but for mankind], and man was not made [created] for the sabbath: Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

Luke 4:16
As his custom was, he [Jesus] went into the synagogue on the sabbath day

Matthew 12.11-12
And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.

Jesus, prophecying concerning the fall of Jerusalem and also of end of the world issues, states:

Matthew 24.20
But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:

Christ invited people to His rest on a Sabbath day.

Matthew 11.28-30 Matthew 12.1-3
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat. But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day. But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred...

The invitation in the text above is in the immediate context of two Sabbath episodes (chapter 12). On the Sabbath they ate-- corn from the field. Jesus justifies their actions by refering to the temple bread. The connection suggests that Christ the bread of life, is very much part of the Sabbath, and as we come apart to rest with Him on the Sabbath He feeds us with spiritual food.

The following text in Mark is not specifically about the Sabbath but Jesus recognizes the need which we as human beings have, to literally physically come apart from the routines of life and rest.
Mark 6.31
And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.

Again we see the connection of "resting" and "eating", being renewed physically and spiritually. All through the NT, Christ upholds the Sabbath as a day of restoration, a day to reach out in helpful acts, to others.

5.
Honor Your Father and Mother that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

Matthew 15:4-9
Jesus answered, "And why do you disobey God's command and follow your own teaching?
For God said, "Honour your father and your mother,' and "Whoever curses his father or his mother is to be put to death.'
But you teach that if a person has something he could use to help his father or mother, but says, "This belongs to God,'
he does not need to honor his father. In this way you disregard God's command, in order to follow your own teaching.
You hypocrites! How right Isaiah was when he prophesied about you!
"These people, says God, honor me with their words, but their heart is really far away from me.
It is no use for them to worship me, because they teach man-made rules as though they were my laws!"

6.
You will not kill.

Jesus points us back to the first violator of this commandment.

John 8.44
...the devil...He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him.

Jesus also explains the full meaning of the command.

Matt. 5.21-24
You have heard that it told them long ago, Thou shalt not kill; and who ever kills would be in danger of the judgment:
But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, you worthless fellow, shall be in danger of the council: but who ever shall say, you fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
Therefore if you bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that your brother hath ought against thee; 5.24 Leave there your gift before the altar, and go your way; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

Matthew 5.43,44
Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Matthew 26:52
[Jesus said] All they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.

7.
You will not commit adultery.

Here again we see Jesus pointing back to the original law of God as it was introduced in Eden, while He reproves the corruption of this commandment which had occured under Jewish regulations.

Matthew 19.8,9
He [Jesus] said to them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, commits adultery: and who marrys her which is put away commits adultery.

Matthew 19.4-6
And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

Matthew 5.8
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Matthew 5: 27-
"You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.' But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Matthew 5:32
But now I tell you: if a man divorces his wife for any cause other than her unfaithfulness, then he is guilty of making her commit adultery if she marries again; and the man who marries her commits adultery also.

Mark 10:11
He said to them, "A man who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against his wife. 12 In the same way, a woman who divorces her husband and marries another man commits adultery."

8.
You will not steal.

Christ contrasts His mission as being the very opposite of a thief.

John 10.10
The thief comes only to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

All through the teachings of Jesus we see the concept of GIVING to others in sharp contrast to the natural grasping, get for myself, tendencies of the carnal nature. To steal is the very opposite of the concept of giving which Christ teaches.

9.
You will not bear false witness against they neighbor.

Jesus points us back to the first violator of this commandment.

John 8.44
...the devil...there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Jesus also explains the full meaning of the command.

Matthew 12.34-37
O generation of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart brings forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

The saddest defiance against this commandment was manifested against the Son of God Himself.

Matthew 26.59
Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death;

Mark 14.56
For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together. And there arose certain, and bare false witness against him, saying....

You will not covet your neighbor's house, you will not covet your neighor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his oxen, nor his donkeys, nor anything that belongs to your neighbor.

Luke 12:15
Jesus said to them... "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of covetousness; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."

Matthew 6:25
Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, or what you will wear.

Jesus said,
John 14.15
If ye love me, keep my commandments.

The Commandments according to the Apostles

Romans 13.9
For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery,
Thou shalt not kill,
Thou shalt not steal,
Thou shalt not bear false witness,
Thou shalt not covet;
and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely,
Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

1 Cor. 6.9-10
Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters...shall inherit the kingdom of God.

"Even though you boast of the law, it is your breaking of the law that dishonours God. For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you."

Yes by claiming to be God's people yet not living the righteous life we take God's name in vain and dishonor Him.

1 John 5.2
By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.

1 John 2.6
He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

REMEMBER
the Sabbath day to keep it holy,
six days you shall labor and do all your work
but the SEVENTH-DAY is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. You shall not do any work in it, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your man-servant, nor your maid-servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates; For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.

Did you notice how many times Paul tells people to worship the GOD WHO CREATED the heavens and the earth? Acts 14:15; 17:25;
In this we see the protection the Sabbath (if properly understood) gives against idol worship. For the Sabbath is a memorial of the seven day creation week when God created our world. To ignore the Sabbath, makes it easy to deny the seven-day creation week, and special creation, and opens the door to worshipping the created rather than the CREATOR.

Notice Paul's example concerning the Sabbath.

Acts 13.42,44,45
And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles requested that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath. And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God. But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy

Acts 16.13
And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where it was reported that people gathered for prayer; and we sat down,

Acts 17.2-4
And Paul, as his manner was, went to the synogogue, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures, Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs of suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ. And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

Acts 18.3,4
And because he was of the same craft, he stayed with them, (Aquilla and Priscilla) and worked: for by their occupation they were tentmakers. And every Sabbath he went to the synagogue, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.

Here we clearly see Paul working-- making tents during the week but on Sabbath he goes to worship-- even when there IS NO SYNOGOGUE, and he has to find a small group worshipping by the river.

Hebs. 4:4, 9
For he spake in a certain place of the seventh [day] on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works....
Therefore a Sabbath Rest Remains for the people of God.

The author of Hebrews makes it plain that the Sabbath continues. The verb "remains" is "(apoleipetai) which literally means "has been left."
The Greek word translated "rest" in every other passage throughout Hebrews 3 and 4 is "katapausis." The word for "rest" in Hebrews 4:9 is (sabbatismos). The term (sabbatismos) is seen in the writings of Plutarch, Justin, Epiphanius, and others, and each time the term denotes the observance of the Sabbath.
Therefore the text is saying, that Sabbath obsevance remains for the people of God.
In the same way that Jesus taught the sixth and seventh commandment reaches into the very motives and purposes of the heart, so Hebrews shows that Sabbath keeping means much more than simply refraining from work-- BUT Sabbath observance remains.

Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

Colossians 3: 20
Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.

1 Timothy 5.4
But if any widow have children or grandchildren, let them learn first to show piety at home, and to make some return to their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.

...hatred, discord, fits of rage, dissensions, factions...those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Ephesians 4.31
Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:

Revelation 21:8
...Murderers...their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Hebrews 13: 4 Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral

1 Cor. 6:9-10 Do you not know that....the sexually immoral nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexual offenders...will inherit the kingdom of God.

1 Peter 1.13-15 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;

"For this you know, that no immoral person, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God."

1 Timothy 6.8-9
And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

The Principles of Love in the Commandments

As we have seen, God's moral law is eternal, it was there long before Sinai, nor did it "fade away" after the cross along with the ceremonial laws.

Yet some will say this moral law is abolished and replaced by a new law of love. We must ask ourselves, is the above law in opposition to love? No, never! It is the law of love, love God supremely and love others every bit as much as yourself. This concept is woven all through the Bible as well. God's laws were always rooted and grounded in the principles of LOVE.

Duet. 6.4-6

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:
And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

Duet. 11.13
And it shall come to pass, if you diligently heed my commandments which I command you this day, to love the LORD your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul,

Where was God's law to be?
In the heart!

What were the commandments they were to heed?
The command to love God and serve Him from the heart!

Exactly what it says in the New Testament-- it was no new command, to replace God's moral law, no God's moral law is based on the law of LOVE.

Duet. 30:6

And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live.

Here we see the same message Paul gives in Colossians 2:11, that God wants the spiritual circumcision that sets believers free from the power of sin.

Joshua 22.5
But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.

Again we see what God's commandments really were-- to love God, to cleave to Him, to serve Him and to obey Him.

Duet. 19.17
You are not to hate your brother in your heart:

You are not to avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you are to love your neighbour as yourself: I am the LORD.

Psalm 82.3-4
Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy. Deliver the poor and needy

What were the big reasons Israel lost the favor and protection of God and fell to their enemies

It was because they did not follow the laws of love, they did not love the Lord, and they oppressed the poor instead of helping them, it was because they took advantage of one another, and mercy and justice was cast aside.

Jeremiah 2:13
"For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, and hewn themselves cisters--broken cisterns that hold no water.

Jeremiah 2:32
My people have forgotten Me days without number.

Many more texts could be quoted to show that the sins God held against Israel, were sins of lack of real love;
forgetting and forsaking God, and having no compassion for their fellowmen. There never was a time when all God wanted was the "basic" outward compliance. Religion was to be from the heart, and the commandments define love, they are based on love. Love to God first, and also to our those around us.
